Laura Sheriff, Licensed Conveyancer at Holden Smith

What is your role at Holden Smith and how did you get into a career in law?

I have been qualified as a Licensed Conveyancer since the beginning of 2019 and have worked in property since 2014. I started off at admin level and grew to enjoy property law and knew it was the path for me.

What are we likely to find you doing on a day-to-day basis?

I deal with all types of property transactions such as sales, purchases and re-mortgages, and I’m regularly on the phone to our clients and third parties or getting my head into the legal documentation!

What kind of problem might you solve on a typical day / week?

Dealing with a variety of different transactions means I have to manage my time a great deal and go back and forth between matters throughout the day. Deadlines are a big part of my job as we always do our best to ensure our clients have a quick and efficient move.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Giving the clients the news that their transaction is completed. I can literally hear the client’s shoulders drop and relax!

Tell us what makes Holden Smith different…

Holden Smith is a great place to work and although I’ve only been here a short time, my colleagues have been very supportive and have made me feel very welcome.

What three words do you think (hope!) your colleagues would use to describe you?

Efficient, organised and approachable.

What are we most likely to find you doing when you’re not at work?

Spending time with my family. I recently became a mum for the first time, so I’m usually taking my daughter to swimming and other activities.

What’s your favourite spot in Yorkshire and why?

York, I love the city and the little old street, and I find somewhere new every time I go. The bars and restaurants are really nice, too.
